Several of my work mates were fired and a few more quit their jobs. I almost lost my job one day just because my boss thought I could secure a fitting faster. Several people started finding ways to avoid the supervisors and get as little work done as possible. Many of my co-workers developed back problems. We jokingly called it the `Hibernia backache because some employees faked their ailment to leave the rig with paid sick leave. On top of the lousy supervisors, we were always kept in the dark about the problems on the rig. Supervisors said that they didnt know anything, which was partly true, but they said we shouldnt be so interested in things that didnt concern us. But the rigs problems, as well as its future contract work, were a major concern to crew members who werent ready to quit. Their job security depended on the rigs production levels and whether CanOil would sign contracts to drill new holes. Given the rigs problems, most of us were concerned that we would be laid off at any time. Everything came to a head when Bob MacKenzie was killed because someone secured a hoist improperly. You probably read about it in the papers around this time last year. The government inquiry concluded that the person responsible wasnt properly trained and that employees were being pushed to finish jobs without safety

With today’s workforce becoming increasingly diverse and organizations doing more to maximize the benefits of the differences in employees, human resource managers are key players. Organizations are relying on managers to get the people who get the job done, and of course, make the company money. Human resource managers have three fundamental functions: 1) line function – directing activities within the department and related areas while having implied authority, 2) coordinative function – coordinating personnel activities and 3) staff functions – assisting and advising line managers. Then the state legislature authorized the raising of an army an approved money to supply weapons. In response, Jackson began military preparations. He also tried to resolve this peacefully by trying to lower the tariff even more. On December 10, Jackson told the people of South Carolina that disunion by armed forces would be an act of treason and if they do that, he would resort to use force. Jackson insisted that banks were unconstitutional and a dangerous monopoly that is only beneficial for the rich man. The banking system was working for 20 years. Jackson was barely educated, so of course he wouldnt understand the system. He had people that worked for him who understood that system, but those people were elitist, he wanted to get rid of it no matter what.His dislike or the elite class was so strong, that it led to the destruction of the bank. Jackson reason for removing the Indians was for the expansion Of our country he believed that they were in the way of white settlement. He thought they were savages, since they were incapable of self-government. Even though Jackson paid for the prices of their lands and their resettlement, it is still horrible to remove them from their land. The Cherokee inhabited the land that was suitable for growing cotton. Jackson wanted that land, but the Indians didnt want to move. So they adapted our ways just to stay on our and.The Indians even established their own state, but Georgia didnt want that. Indians were being murdered and this was brought to the supreme court. John Marshall said that these acts were unconstitutional. However, Jackson supported Georgians position, independent nations cant exist in the United States. Eventually they were forced to leave their land. These are some of the thing Jackson did during his presidency. We believe most of his actions were wrong, however, we do have to commend him for certain actions. They only thing we applaud him for is his response to the nullification crisis.

Definition The word schizophrenia is derived from two Greek words, viz. â€Å"skhein, which translated means ‘to split’ and phrein, which translates to â€Å"mind† (Tandon Maj, 2008, p. 23). Although this etymologizing is mi stakenly understood to mean that it is a â€Å"split-personality† disorder by many people, schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder characterized mainly by bizarre delusions, hallucinations, and emotional dissociation. Unlike in other mental disorders such as Tourette’s syndrome and autism where the victims are aware of their actions, individuals with schizophrenia are clueless as to whether they suffer from symptoms of the disorder. Being a disorder that occurs as a combination of various other disorders, schizophrenia is defined through its characteristic elements. Tandon and Maj (2008), define schizophrenia as, â€Å"A mental illness in which a person is unable to link her or his thoughts and feelings to real life, suffers from delusions and withdraws increasingly form social relationships into a life of the imaginations† (p.23). The American Psychiatric Association has set out a criterion for the determination of the disorder. According to the manual, in orde r to be diagnosed with the disorder, a person must have: Two (or more) of the following, each present for the significant portion of the time during a one-month period: (1) delusions, (2) hallucinations, (3) disorganized speech, (4) grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior, (5) symptoms such as flat affect ( i.e. showing no emotion), or inability to engage in goal-directed behavior Social/ occupational dysfunction: one or more major areas of functioning (e.g. work, relationship, and self-care) are markedly lower than when the symptoms began. Duration: – continuous signs of the disturbance for at least six months including at least one month of active symptoms. Symptoms are not due to another disorder (e.g. major depressive disorder, autism), and are not due to substance use or a medical condition (American Psychiatric Association, 2000, p.308). Causes Given that different people suffering from the disorder bare unique symptoms from one another coupled with the variation o f the symptoms that each of the individuals encounters with the progression of the disorder, a diagnosis on the disorder is made based on observation of behavior and experiences reported to the psychologist concerning an individual. Schizophrenia usually affects people in their late childhood and early adulthood, and it progresses as people grow older (Marshall Rathbone, 2009). Some of the known causes of the disorder include genetic factors, environmental factors, drug, and substance abuse. Some scholars also argue that traumatic effects in a person’s life can trigger the onset of the disorder, especially in young adults with a genetic predisposition to the disorder (O’Donovan et al., 2003). Effects on Family and society The disorder has a myriad of effects to the individual and the immediate family, as well as the public. Due to the disorder’s interference with the thought process, the majority of people with schizophrenia display some form of disorganization in the way they perform some of the normal activities such as dressing. They also suffer from disconnection in the train of thought when discussing issues, lack of long-term memory, low attention spans, poor commu nication skills, and display a lack in cognitive processes such as planning and problem solving. This aspect usually results to long-term job loss and consequently depression and irritability. Such individuals become withdrawn, thus keeping to themselves most of the time. Living with such a person within the family unit can be frustrating, as although the person suffers an inability to display affection, it does not necessarily mean that he or she does not need it (Broom et al., 2005, p.31). On the other hand, it is difficult for family members to show their affection to a person who is withdrawn and emotionally detached as it is innate to expect reciprocation when affection is given. Stigma is also common toward people with schizophrenia, mainly because of ignorance and misinformation of what the disorder entails. Family members are sometimes compelled to hide the fact that one of them suffers from the disorder for fear that most people do not know the disorder as a medical conditi on, but rather as a personality disorder associated with heinous behavior such as serial killing. Family members also may not know the proper way to explain the intricacies of the disorder, as they are hard to understand even for the family members, as the symptoms keep changing as the disorder graduates. It is hard for a person with schizophrenia to hide its symptoms because they do not think that they suffer from it. Emotional dissociation means that a person is unable to convey emotions, whether verbally or by any other means, and as a characteristic symptom of schizophrenia, it causes the victim to keep emotions, good or bad, bottled up inside. It is also characteristic of schi zophrenics to suffer from an inability to experience pleasure, mainly due to their paranoid delusions of persecution. The combination of these two characteristics is dangerous mainly due to the ways these individuals resort to as means of releasing the bottled up emotions. Most of them result to drug abuse and alcoholism (Perala et al., 2010) while others go to the extremes, experiencing sudden bursts of rage or extreme sorrow, which may cause them to destroy property or even commit suicide. Although prevention would go a long way in alleviating the disorder, it is not a possibility yet, for the first symptoms of the disorder are not discernible, as they resemble symptoms of normal factors such as stress. The symptoms can be singled out as specific to schizophrenia only at advanced stages. In addition, the fact that the disorder is more predominant in young adults means that it is not easy to differentiate it from normal adolescence characters (Van Os Kapur, 2009). The participatio n of family members in the rehabilitation forums and consequently the recovery process is essential to both the family and the suffering individual. It prepares the family unit mentally and physically on what to expect and what the appropriate reaction would be. It also helps them to prepare financially so that they do not undergo sudden financial strain. In addition, it aids in the acceptance process and helps them learn hoe to deal with stigma and its effects. Family members are in a position to know that they would have to make social sacrifices in order to keep the family unit strong. About the individual, family support helps to ease the issues of acceptance that surround schizophrenic individuals. Although the way the family treats a schizophrenic individual is not necessarily a cause for the trigger or elevati on of the disorder, it does help in the recovery process. Family support presumably reduces resentment and anger and thus it plays a role in the reduction of chances of a relapse after recovery. Knowledge of how to deal with the condition as a family also reduces the chances of involuntary hospitalization, which in moments of paranoid schizophrenia might be interpreted by the schizophrenic individual as an act of rejection by the family, thus causing anger and resentment. Supportive work environments are also a good way of aiding in the recovery process as such environments give the victims something to concentrate on unlike in situations when they are left alone. The fact that they have the disorder does not negate their sanity and their ability, although restricted by their condition, to be productive. Conclusion Although misunderstood by most people as more of a personality disorder, schizophrenia is in fact a medical disorder that disrupts the normal functioning of the individua l affected, without the knowledge of the sufferer that he or she does indeed suffer from it. The attitude of the people surrounding the individual suffering form it plays a big role in the management and recovery of the sufferer. Particularly, family members play a critical role in helping the victims of this condition along the way, which helps one to accept the condition and live positively. And how does documenting one help you achieve...Step One: What Does Your Company Do? The first step in creating your marketing process is to highlight the mission statement of your company. All of your marketing efforts will revolve around fulfilling that statement for your customers. Start with your mission statement.Step Two: Conduct a SWOT, 5C’s or PEST Analysis The next step in creating your marketing process is running an analysis for your marketers. You have three options to choose from: A SWOT analysis.  These analyses  run through the internal and external strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that your organization faces. The 5C’s analysis.  The 5C’s analyses focus on the company, collaborators, customers, competitors, and climate of your marketing. A PEST Analysis.  The PEST analysis focuses on more environmental factors like politics, the environment, social climate, and technology. Here are three types of competitive analyses to consider when documenting the #marketing process.Conducting a SWOT Analysis A SWOT analysis  a relatively straightforward process. As a team, you will need to identify the internal strengths and weaknesses of your organization. To find your strengths  answer questions like: What does our organization do well? What processes do we have in place that help us stay efficient? What do we currently do that is a unique strength of our organization? To find your weaknesses  answer questions like: What could we improve in our organization? What is causing a constant roadblock to our progress? Are there changes in our industry that could threaten our efforts? Is there anything going on politically, economically, or socially that could hinder our marketing efforts? Fill in your analysis in the marketing process template. This is how to run a 5 C's analysis.Running a PEST Analysis No, this isn’t about potential bugs in the office. A PEST analysis involves  looking at the political, economic, social, and technological factors that may affect your organization. To run a PEST analysis, record answers to the following questions. Political Climate Questions: Are there any upcoming elections that could affect the way our product is used or made? Could any upcoming legislation affect the way our organization conducts its business? If there is an upcoming legislation change that affects your organization, how quickly will that take effect? Economic Climate Questions: What is the current outlook for the economy? If you do business with foreign countries, what does the current exchange rate look like? How much are our target audience members spending on products or services we sell? Social Climate Questions: Are there any social movements that our company should be addressing? How does the upcoming generation of buyers feel about our product? Is there any social faux-pas arising that could affect how people view our business? Technological Climate Questions: Are there any new tech tools that could help us do our jobs better? Are there any new tech advancements in our industry that we could bring to our customers? If new technology is coming to our industry, how quickly will it make an appearance? Record your answers in the PEST analysis template you downloaded earlier. Here's how to run a PEST analysis.Step Three: Creating Your Marketing Strategy Now that you have a full analysis of your organization  and your industry, you can begin to shape your marketing strategy. Define Your Target Audience To start creating your strategy, you need to define who your target audience is.   Your target audience is: â€Å"The ideal customer you want to attract to your product or service through your marketing efforts.† To start finding your target audience ask your marketers the following: Who is already a part of our existing audience? Who responds best to our efforts? Why do people use our product or service? What type of problem do they experience? Don't forget your target audience.Creating Marketing Goals The next step in formatting your marketing strategy is to develop a series of marketing goals that connect back to the business goals that were mentioned earlier. A possible marketing goal for this example would be: â€Å"Increase the website referral traffic coming from social media channels by 25% in the next quarter.† You can set as many goals as you need to complete each marketing project. Ensuring Your Marketing Goals Contribute to the Bottomline Let's say your overarching business goal is to have 20 million in revenue by 2020. In order to increase revenue, you have to increase sales. In order to increase sales, you've got to increase leads coming into the marketing funnel. This is where you come in. You've identified that you need to bring in 1,000 leads per month. Working back from there helps you identify the one lead metric to focus on. Your website is the largest lead generator, so to increase the number of leads, you've got to increase traffic. Say you get 5,000 website visitors each month; is it possible to convert 20 percent of them? Likely not. In reality, a 2-5 percent conversion rate is more accurate. To hit your goal of 1,000 leads, you need between 20,000 and 50,000 website visitors. Now you've found the one metric to focus on. Every activity you do should focus on increasing the volume of website visitors from 5,000 to 20,000 (to hit a 5 percent conversion rate). Set A Budget The last step in your marketing strategy is setting a budget up. Your budget will determine what resources and strategies you use throughout the year. Causes and Effects of Learning Difficulties All learning disabilities are neurological disorders, the effects are from difference in the way an individual’s brain function. Children with learning disabilities can be as smart as their peers who do not have learning challenges. However, it can be difficult for children with learning disabilities to read, write, reason, recall information, spell and often times figure things out on their own without guidance. Learning disabilities are usually lifelong issues and they cannot be fixed or cured. Children that suffer from learning disabilities can succeed in school with the right support and supervision. Parents play an important part in a child’s success in school. Parents should encourage children’s strengths and know their weakness. They should understand the education system and learn about strategies in overcoming specific difficulties in the learning disability by collaborations and educating themselves by professionals. Many famous people in American histo ry had learning disabilities such as Albert Einstein who wasn’t able to read until age nine (What is a Learning Disability? | LD OnLine, n.d.). According to the National Institutes of Health one in every seven Americans suffers from at least one learning disability. Reading difficulty dominates with up to 80 percent of students struggling with reading on a daily basis. Additionally, basic reading and language abilities are commonly present in children that suffer from learning disabilities. Modern medicine has come a long way in diagnosing and treating some of the common learning disabilities such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) and Dyslexia, as well as the lesser known Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Visual Perceptual and Visual Motor Deficit. Scientists are learning every day how to better diagnose and increase support for those that are burdened with learning challenges. If a child’s learning disability is discovered early enough in their life the right guidance can help the child develop the necessary skills needed to live a productive life. Recently the National Institute of Health held a study which revealed over 67 percent of students with reading difficulties becoming at an average level or above in reading after special help was provided in early grades. If a parent is educated and aware of the early signs of learning disabilities, they can recognize potential signs early and get them help. Many parents can recognize character in their children that can possibly be caused by learning disabilities. At a preschool age if a parent notices the pronunciation problems, difficulty following directions, slow vocabulary, pronunciation, trouble learning numbers, alphabet, colors and shapes and often speaks later than children their age they should get their child checked for learning disabilities. In kindergarten through fourth grade children with disabilities can show signs of slow learning the connections between letters and sounds, confusing basic words, making constant spelling and reading errors and poor coordination. Through grade 5 and 8 children may have difficulty with handwriting, reverse letter sequences, trouble making friends and trouble understanding body language and facial expressions. In high school and through their adult years a person with a learning disability may continue to spell incorrectly, have trouble summarizing, and difficulty adjusting to new settings. Learning disabilities were an unknown phenomenon simply chalked up to be Minima brain damage prior to the 1940’s. There was no difference between a student with brain damage, and a lower IQ, versus a student with a high intelligence and a learning disability (History of Learning Disabilities (Part 1), n.d.). Dr. Douglas Haddad says â€Å"children who exhibited difficulties in learning were thought to be mentally retarded, displayed emotional disturbances, or be socially and culturally disturbed. Early studies on individuals with learning problems reported that they had the same learning problems as individuals who were shown to have brain damage, but appeared normal, otherwise. Thus, the term â€Å"minimal brain damage† was introduced. â€Å". Further research suggested that these learning issues were not so much issues with the brain itself, but more biologically stimulated learning disabilities. The term â€Å"minimal brain dysfunction† (MBD) was introduced. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy created the President’s Panel on Mental Retardation (Chiles, 1987). Increasing amounts of cases caused interest in student learning, and research began. â€Å"In 1969, the federal government recognized â€Å"specific learning disabilities† as a category with special education. The concept of specific learning disabilities referred to a certain subgroup of students who did not achieve academically with their ability, seemingly due to a central nervous system dysfunction that was mainly attributed to a wide spectrum of psychological disorders.† -Dr. Douglas Haddad. Now students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have special programs set up for them to learn in an environment unique to their needs. Our senses are separated, so not everything that our ears hear is interpreted by our brains. This would be the case with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). Students with this disorder can have hearing that is passing, or even above average for their auditory test, but have trouble learning due to the fact that they cannot interpret the sounds that they hear. For the average person the brain processes sounds seamlessly and almost instantly. With APD, some difference mixes that process, to a child with APD, â€Å"Do you want to ride your bike or watch a movie?† may be processed or perceived as â€Å"Do you like Mike or batch cookies†. It can make simple questions or commands extremely difficult for someone who has been diagnosed with APD. Other learning disorders present very similar problems in daily tasks. Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia are two examples of other learning disorders that can make the normal learning process a difficult and uncomfortable experience. Dyscalcul ia is defined as a mathematical disability in which a person has a difficult time solving arithmetic problems and grasping math concepts. Dysgraphia is defined as a writing disability in which a person finds it hard to form letter or write within a defined space. Children and adults can suffer from one or more of these learning disabilities which would make conventional learning extremely difficult (Understood | For Learning and Attention Issues Understood, n.d.). Recent research suggests that auditory processing issues may be a contributing factor to dyslexia.† Professionals can diagnose these different learning disorders, and generally they diagnose them at a young age. There is no difference in what these children see or hear, but there is a major difference in the way that they receive this information. They can struggle in one area such as Math, or English, or even memory but excel in others. Specialized teachers can play a major part in ensuring that these children succeed in today’s world. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder had first been described in 1902 by a Sir George Still, followed by the evidence that ADHD could arise from brain injury in 1923 by a Franklin Ebaugh; in 1967 the Federal Government funds (National Institute of Mental Health) first used for studying effects of stimulants on children with hyperactivity. Statistics of ADHD had begun in 1972 with a little under 6% for the National Health Interview Survey, followed by a second survey in 1976 with statistics closer to 5% in a time where Cylert, Dextrostat and Dexadrine had come on to the market to compete with Adderall (Data and Statistics | ADHD | NCBDDD | CDC, n.d.). This however was the beginning of the mediation processes which had started to overtake practical practices of helping this dysfunction. The rates of ADHD only continued to grow by a slower percentage, but picking up to approximately 3% per year from 1997 to 2006 and an average of approximately 5% per year from 2003 to 2011, surveys showing that the increase is growing exponentially by the years! In 2003 the survey had a statistic result of 7.8% for children diagnosed, then had grown to 9.5% in 2007 and in 2011 the statistic was up to 11% in children between the ages of 4-17 (6.4 million). The average varied from state to state with a low 5.6% in Nevada to a high of 18.7% in Kentucky (Data and Statistics | ADHD | NCBDDD | CDC, n.d.). Kids with ADHD tend to be easily distracted, missing details, and frequently changing what they are doing at the very moment after a few minutes. They have difficulty focusing on one thing and become bored very easily. Many times they have trouble focusing, organizing, learning and completing homework, often losing things such as pencils and toys. Day dreaming is common, difficulty processing information quickly and accurately, as well as following guidance or instructions. Also symptoms of hyperactivity may cause fighting, nonstop talking, dashing around, having difficulty doing t asks quietly and impulsively blurt out random comments, show emotions without restraint (NIMH †¢ Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, n.d.). Many victims of this disability are usually overlooked due to adults thinking it is simply disciplinary problems, but ADHD is growing because of genes, environmental factors, brain injuries, sugary foods and additives in foods. ADHD is treated with medications and various types of psychotherapy or combination of the treatments. The parents who have kids with this condition can help by making structure in the child’s life, such as organizing everyday items, using homework and notebook organizers, being clear and consistent, especially giving praise or rewards when rules are followed. Formal definition of dyslexia is â€Å"a disorder in children who, despite conventional classroom experience, fail to attain the language skills of reading, writing and spelling commensurate with their intellectual abilities (World Federation of Ne urology, 1968, pg 26). . Dyslexia was first unknowingly discovered in 1890’s and early 1900s by a British ophthalmologist named James Hinshelwood. He defines it as a congenital defect, occurring in children with otherwise normal and undamaged brains characterized by a difficulty in learning to read. He noticed symptoms like difficulty reading and writing also letter reversal was largely common. Later on a neurologist in 1925 by the name of Samuel T. Orton worked primarily on stroke victims until he met a girl who could not read and had the same symptoms of those stroke victims. He then began to research, reading difficulties that are unrelated to brain damage and has determined a syndrome as such. Orton had observed that visual deficits did not cause dyslexia, but something else did. His theory was that the condition was caused in the brain by failure to establish hemispheric dominance. Orton also noticed that the children he was studying were largely left or mixed handed (He nry, 1998). Each individual experiences different severity of this learning disability, but all have the same symptoms that affect reading, fluency and comprehension, recalling information, writing, spelling and in some cases speech patterns. Dyslexia can also exist with other learning disabilities and can sometimes be the cause of those with learning disabilities. Dyslexia is often called the language based learning disability due to most of its symptoms being language related (Dyslexia, n.d.). Symptoms of dyslexia may include reading slowly, experiencing disorder of letters, difficulty with math computation and difficulty recalling known words. Some strategies in overcoming dyslexia include using Audiobooks and books with large print and spacing between the lines. Teachers should use other methods to allow progress for student with dyslexia such as allowing alternate forms of book reports, provide students with a copy of lecture notes, and teach student to use logic rather than memory on tests and other work. Through our eyesight we gain visual information that helps us process our surroundings and allows us to manage our daily activities. Our visual perception plays a key role in our abilities to learn mathematics, spelling and reading. Deficits in visual perception can lead to learning deficiencies in learning basic mathematics, recognizing and remembering words and letters, also the mathematical concepts of size and position, as well as mixing up words with similar begi nnings and poor handwriting. All these characteristically been associated with learning disabilities of visual processing disorder. Auditory processing disorder involves a deficit in a person’s ability to analyze information received through hearing. It is not to be confused with problems such as deafness or being hard of hearing. A person with auditory processing disorder can hear just fine the issue is much deeper in the way the brain processes the information received. This learning disability interferes with language and speech learning as well as reading and spelling. Especially when instructions given in classrooms are primarily verbal, a child with this deficit can have extremely hard time following instructions and understanding the lesson. Some ways teachers can help students with this disability include allowing students to dictate creative stories, allowing use of computer word processing, avoiding grading handwriting, using large print books, providing tracking to ols for reading such as rulers and text windows and providing alternatives to written assignments for those students (Visual Perceptual/Visual Motor Deficit, n.d.). In comparison to the general population people with learning disabilities have a greater chance of developing physical and mental issues. As a result of their lack of ability to properly describe their symptoms to a health care professional many are left untreated. Although life expectancy is increasing over time individuals with learning disability still are at a higher risk of early death (Hollins et al., 1998; McGuigan et al., 1995). Parents play a great role in a child learning process, especially when a child has a learning deficiency. Parents need to keep things in perspective, if to help their child succeed. Learning disabilities are not undefeatable, give your child plenty of physical and emotional support. Be an expert in your child, every child is unique even when they have the same learning disability do your own research into what helps and what does for your child. Learn about programs and techniques that can improve their learning ability. Embrace being a proactive parent and speak up for your child to get special attention they need from teachers and other educators but remain calm and realistic. A Few Greek Gods Essay -- essays research papers

The Ancient Greeks believed in a series of myths which explained nature, set up a moral code for the people, and were just folk lore of the people. In this paper, the beginnings of myths, the Greek gods themselves, and several myths concerning morals, nature, and old lore of the Ancients will be discussed. Because the myths and details about the gods were passed along by word of mouth, some myths or gods might be interchanged or different. The Greek myths started as folk lore until it began to explain nature and storytellers integrated a moral code into the myths. Many myths started out as fairy tales. As new and more efficient farming methods became available to the Greek people they were faced with more time in which to do other things. A people who have waste develop a culture all their own. Because Greece was divided into different city- states, many of the myths are different. The culture of storytelling began to involve explanations of nature such as the creation of the horse, spider, and such changes as winter and fire along with the creation of man himself. Slowly, as with any longstanding government, the morals and laws of society leaked into Greek myths in the form of, "The slain shall be avenged by Nemesis (a force which causes people to get revenge)," or just, "Kindness and humbleness are rewarded by the gods." Some myths were even created to support other myths. The myths started with storytelling and developed into a complex system of morals and explanations. The Greek myths were almost fruitless without the intervention of the gods. The gods controlled nature and fought their own battles on the earth, which sometimes caused problems. The first god was the most powerful one until he had children. The first god is called Oranos or in some myths Uranus. He was the first ruler among the gods. Uranus was the heavens and Gaea was the earth and thus they were married. The couple gave birth to many different and odd children but Uranus was cruel to them. Then, Chronos was born as the youngest titan. Chronos dethroned his father and soon after married his sister, Rhea. He didn't want his children to dethrone him so he ate them. However, Zeus overthrew Chronos and established the first real empire of the gods. Zeus settled disputes between the other gods and made sure the humans weren't treated in... ...horselike animals. The gods control the seasons as we know them today in this Greek myth. Hades was on the surface of the earth on business when Eros shot him with an arrow. Hades fell in love with Persephone and stole her away into the Underworld. Demeter, Persephone's mother, searched for her daughter and when she could not find her, froze the earth. Zeus didn't want the earth to wither and die so he sent Hermes to fix the situation. Since Persephone ate part of a pomegranate, she would stay with Hades part of the year and live on the world the rest of the year. All the time she would be gone, Demeter would weep and snow would fall. Fall is caused by her anticipation of her daughter leaving. This myth demonstrates the power of the gods, the power of love, and how fall and winter happen. The Greek gods and myths were a vital part to the ancient Greeks. The myths do explain nature and set up an orderly manner in which people should act. The myths, however, use gods to explain nature in order to substitute for pure logic. All the myths have meanings or explanations in which all the ancient questions are answered. The Greek myths were vital to Grecian society.
